Fitness IS Professional Development

Yeah, I hear it.  It sounds like marketing… but it’s true.

Being fit can be seen as a sort of “capital” in itself.  Research shows that fit people earn 6 to 10% more than their less fit peers, they’re given better opportunities and shown favoritism.  As unfair as it sounds, the reasons behind it are solid.

Let’s start with the internal reasons.  A fit person’s “engine” runs more optimally than someone who isn’t.  Physical fitness improves your focus letting you get more done in less time.  It ramps up cognitive function, leading to less decision fatigue and sharper problem solving.  Being in shape even improves your overall mood.

I know this from experience.  After getting in shape, I enjoy everything more.  I’m easier to be around.  I can handle more work without losing energy.  I don’t feel those defensive feelings I had when I was overweight.  Mentally, it’s night and day.

But now let’s think about the external reasons.  You’re given more respect.  You’re taken as an expert immediately.  People are drawn to you innately.  Again, unfair, but it’s absolutely been my experience.

When I was 220 lbs, people were polite but I wasn’t taken seriously.  I was everyone’s chubby little friend.  A “sweet” guy.  Now, on the other side of 70 lbs being lost, people seem to immediately take me for my word.  People actually listen to me when I speak.  They judge me differently and take me as an authority.  Sure, I’m more confident than I was before - but this is a case of the chicken and the egg.  It doesn’t matter which came first.  All that matters is that it’s true and how it pertains to you.

Be honest - does your current lifestyle reflect how you want people to perceive you?  Does your presence have the gravitas you believe it should?  If it doesn’t, why are you waiting?
